MHU area is located 60 km to the southwest of Samarinda, the capital city of East Kalimantan Province.  The area is passed through by Mahakam River, the largest river in East Kalimantan, that flows to its mouth at the Makassar Strait.

In the beginning of its operation, MHU undertook the development of Busang Jonggon (BJO) Block. In 2013, MHU progressively started to expand the development in its two other blocks, namely Teluk Dalam (TDO) and Gitan (GTO).
